After the guns made in 1968 were shipped, Bearcat serial numbers were assigned a "90" prefix. Ruger was allowed to ship Bearcats in 1969 that were actually made in 1968 (Serial numbers 112456 to 114729). Numeric sequential serial numbers continued until 1969 when Ruger was forced by BATFE to come up with a new serial number scheme that could be tied to the model. Alpha cats continued through 1960 (Z-999) then for some unknown reason, Ruger went back to pick up where they left off with straight numeric serial numbers, starting with S/N 1000 then 1001, then jumped to S/N 2000. The second production run in 1958 started the "alpha cats" with A001 through F482. They started with serial number 1 and went through serial number 999 during the first production run in 1958. After Jan 1, 1969, serial numbers had to be in a standard sized font and the S/N had to be located in the same conspicuous place for each type of firearm, plus each different Ruger firearm had a serial number prefix that was unique to the model.īearcats had quite an odd history when it came to serial numbers. Ruger took advantage of these loopholes in the law and did pretty much as they pleased. Companies could pretty much place the serial number wherever they wanted and use whatever font or sequence they wanted. TMICHAEL, Prior to the Gun Control Act of 1968 (went in force on Jan 1, 1969) There really weren't any restrictions on serial number.
